Ornamental Ipomoea

species, hybrids and cultivars

Family: Convolvulaceae

Note that some Ipomea, as pretty as they may be, are weeds in Queensland. See the Queensland Government website for more information: Invasive Plants and Weeds.

Ipomoea horsfalliae (Cardinal Creeper)

These appear in garden centres from time to time but because they are difficult to propagate, supplies are always limited. If you can't find one for sale, talk to your local nursery about placing an order. Ipomoea horsfalliae was discussed in detail in the 23-06-2023 edition of Get Results Gardening, a weekly email publication for Australian gardeners, especially those in the tropical, subtropical and warm temperate parts of the country. Find out how to get a free trial at calyx.com.au/getresultsgardening.html. At the same time, you can ask for the 23-06-2023 edition to be sent to you if you especially want to read about the cardinal creeper (Australian residents only, please).

Ipomoea batatas (Ornamental Sweet Potato)

Popular in North America for bedding and container displays, these varieties selected for their attractive foliage are less known in Australia but keep an eye out in garden centres in the warmer months.

Ipomoea carnea

This species is more shrubby than climbing. Presumably the plants photographed are subspecies fistulosa, which is the type typically cultivated as an ornamental. Note is that it is considered invasive.
