These very large bromeliads have become very popular for tropical landscaping, making useful accent plants. They're fairly sun-tolerant.

The best known is Alcantarea imperialis (syn. Vriesea imperialis). 'Rubra', 'Purpurea' and 'Peter Tristram' are varieties.

Alcantarea glazouiana and Alcantarea vinicolor are other species that might be found for sale.
